Chancellor appoints permanent leader of OARnet 

Columbus, Ohio (Aug 20, 2018)

Ohio Department of Higher Education Chancellor John Carey recently appointed Paul Schopis as the sixth permanent executive director of the Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet).

Schopis previously served as interim executive director of OARnet, a charter member of ODHE’s Ohio Technology Consortium, located on the west campus of The Ohio State University.

One of Ohio’s regional Information Technology Centers (ITC) has cut operational costs while maintaining high availability to its customers by moving its network services to a centralized location in Columbus.

The Hamilton Clermont Cooperative (HCC) worked for eight months with the Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet) to move its network operations to the State of Ohio Computer Center (SOCC), a project that was completed in June 2016.

Interim Executive Director Paul Schopis recently accepted an honor from BdREN, recognizing the assistance that OARnet has provided in launching the country’s first network for higher education. The group presented Schopis with a framed, hand-embroidered canvas that depicts Shaheed Minar, a national monument in the country’s capital that commemorates those who died fighting to preserve the country’s mother language of Bengali.

OARnet helps CEMAS exhibit remote microscopy at national trade show

For a microscopy center, the chance to show 2,000 visiting researchers and microscopists the cutting-edge capabilities one offers is too important to hit any snags. So when the 2016 Microscopy & Microanalysis meeting came to Columbus, Ohio, The Ohio State University’s Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) turned to OARnet to help exhibit its local and, more importantly, remote microscopy capabilities.

OARnet, OH-TECH group joins unique research networks at The Quilt

Leaders of the Ohio Academic Resources network (OARnet) and the Ohio Technology Consortium attended the winter member meeting of The Quilt from Feb. 8-12 in La Jolla, Calif. The member-led national coalition of 36 U.S. non-profit regional networks meets twice annually to collaborate on best practices and share ideas.

Experts seek to narrow Information and Communication Technology gaps

Paul Schopis’ deep understanding of technology and the powerful resources it provides and enables may just help save lives in East Africa.

Schopis, interim director of OARnet, left for East Africa on Friday as part of a weeklong project titled “Bridging the Gap in eCapacity for Global Health Research and Training in East Africa.” Schopis is part of a group being led by project director Dr. Wondwossen Abebe Gebreyes, director of Global Health Programs for the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University.

Shah elected to additional term for Internet2 Board of Trustees

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 4, 2015 – Pankaj Shah, executive director of the Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet) and the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), has been elected to an additional term for Internet2’s Board of Trustees, according to a press release issued today. Internet2 is the operator of the most advanced infrastructure for research and higher education.
