Network Monitoring Testbeds

We have deployed our ActiveMon software in a large-scale network monitoring testbed called “OSCnet Beacon Infrastructure” (TBI). The testbed includes network paths of OARnet, OSCnet and Internet2 Abilene, connecting- The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, Wright State University, Southern State Community College, Texas A&M University and North Carolina State University. Using the network monitoring data collected from TBI, we have developed advanced data mining techniques to empirically correlate the occurrence of network events to anomalies found in corresponding network measurements data. The anomalies studied include those due to route changes, bandwidth mis-configurations and mis-reporting of measurement tools resulting from resource conflicts. We have also developed a "network weathermap” to visualize the networking monitoring data collected from TBI. The weather-map has also been useful in the analysis of short, medium and long-term (over a six-month period) network performance trends. Further, we have compared the long-term active measurements data with passive measurements (e.g. Netflow, SNMP and syslog) along the different network paths within TBI. We are leveraging our experiences in deploying and maintaining the TBI testbed to improve upon the functionalities of our ActiveMon software.
